Anti Virus on Server 2016 and Windows Defender not disabled

We have 3rd party Anti Virus product on our server and it's all good, apart from Server 2016. It seems that MS in its wisdom does not deactivate Windows Defender on Server 2016 when you install another AV.

So the question is should we remove windows defender on 2016 or disable it with GPOs?

Has anyone looked at this? I can't find any information on any of the vendors websites about this, which is a bit pants really as running both at the same time is likely to cause issues and is a management over head we don't need (just managing the exclusion on two products would be painful and ripe for problems)
